Bush campaign, consultant subpoenaed in debate prep tape mailing

AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) -- A federal grand jury has subpoenaed George W. Bush's presidential campaign and its media consulting firm for documents that might help the FBI determine if criminal wrongdoing was involved in the mailing of a Bush debate preparation tape to a campaign adviser of Democratic rival Al Gore.

At the same time, the FBI has notified the Bush camp that none of its campaign officials are a target of the federal investigation, a senior Bush adviser told CNN Monday.

The adviser said the Bush campaign will comply with the subpoenas from the grand jury sitting in Washington, calling the latest development a "good sign" that investigators will get to the bottom of what happened.

A primary focus of FBI scrutiny is Yvette Lozano, an assistant to the owner of the Maverick Media consulting firm.

A surveillance camera showed her mailing a package last month at the same post office in Austin from which the Bush debate materials were sent to Gore adviser Tom Downey and at around the same time. Downey turned the materials over to the FBI.

Lozano has said she was returning a pair of pants to The Gap for her boss, Mark McKinnon.

The Justice Department said last week investigators had subpoenaed The Gap, Inc., for records related to the pants as part of the FBI's effort to establish a clear timeline to assess Lozano's veracity.

The FBI already has interviewed and fingerprinted several Maverick Media employees and officials of the Bush campaign.
