Tracking poll: Bush and Gore tied -- with a caveat
By CNN Polling Director Keating Holland
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Friday's CNN/USA Today/Gallup tracking poll indicates that Texas Gov. George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore remain tied in the tightly-contested presidential race. Today's figures are virtually unchanged from yesterday's numbers, with Bush and Gore at 45 percent each.
However, the survey of 683 likely voters was conducted Oct. 10-12, meaning only about a third of the interviews were done after the second presidential debate in Wake Forest, North Carolina. The results are based on interviews conducted Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with nearly all of the Wednesday night interviews conducted before the debate finished. In other words, today's tracking poll largely reflects public opinion before the debate and at best only hints at the effect the debate had on the voters.
CNN will be releasing the results of its tracking polls every day until the November 7 elections. The polls monitor public opinion of the presidential race over intervals of two to three days.
