Armed Florida man arrested near Bush's ranch

WACO, Texas (Reuters) -- A 29-year-old Florida man has been arrested after being caught driving a car containing firearms near President-elect George W. Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, a newspaper reported Monday.

The Waco Tribune-Herald reported that suspect John Michael Hughes of Pensacola, Florida was taken into custody Saturday evening after being arrested by a sheriff's deputy assigned to Bush's security detail.

The newspaper quoted Sheriff Larry Lynch as saying he did not know whether the Texas governor was at the ranch at the time of the arrest. Lynch would not discuss the specifics of Hughes' arrest, the Tribune-Herald reported. "All the details of that, we can't make public at this time," Lynch was quoted as saying.

The number of guns retrieved from the vehicle was not disclosed. No shots were fired and there were no reported injuries, the newspaper said. Authorities told the newspaper that Hughes was alone when he was arrested, adding that it was unknown what he was doing near the ranch.

Hughes was charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon, and remained in the McLennan County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bond, the Tribune-Herald reported.
