Rosa finds success with former Menudo buddy

Rob Rosa

(CNN) -- He's been known as Robby Rosa, Robi Rosa, Draco and Ian Blake. But through all of Rob Rosa's name changes, one factor has remained constant: his commitment to music.

Born in Long Island, New York, and raised in Puerto Rico, Rosa joined bilingual boy band Menudo in 1983. He was 14.

After leaving the group at 18, the maximum age for Menudo members, Rosa released four solo albums. He also starred in "Salsa," Latin cinema's 1988 answer to the hit movie "Dirty Dancing."

Rosa reunited with former Menudo buddy Ricky Martin in the mid-1990s and co-produced Martin's third and fourth albums, "A Medio Vivir" and "Vuelvo." Rosa co-wrote, sang backup vocals and created the musical arrangements for a number of individual tracks, too.

Rosa's collaboration with Martin brought him a new level of recognition: seven Grammy nominations and one Grammy. The honors have not made him complacent.

"I like to grab a guitar and sit at the piano and write songs," Rosa says. "Today there are a lot of people writing songs and sampling with little machines that do a lot. You don't really have to play music to write songs.

"I do appreciate all the newer stuff, (but) ... I think it is important we pick up instruments."

Rosa continues to write and produce for Martin and Julio Iglesias. He also finds time for his bands, Maggie's Dream and Sweet and Low.

"I love songwriting," Rosa says. "I like songs. I love aggression and I am a romantic at the same time. It's hard to define it. I like good music."
