Paul Simon named 2001 MusiCares Person of The Year(CNN) -- Paul Simon will be honored as 2001 MusiCares Person of The Year, according to the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS). The award, to be given part of Grammy week in February, goes to musicians who have made significant contributions to the music world and are active in philanthropic endeavors. The ceremony is scheduled for February 19 in Los Angeles, two days before the Grammy Awards. A 16-time Grammy winner, Simon co-founded the New York Children's Health Project to benefit homeless children. He also performs in benefit concerts for causes such as cancer and AIDS. "It is his understanding of the power of art and music to transcend the commonplace stereotypes and heal that makes him an embodiment of MusiCares' mission," said NARAS president/CEO Michael Greene. Simon, once half Simon & Garfunkel, has earned Grammys for "Mrs. Robinson," "Bridge over Troubled Water," "Still Crazy After All These Years" and other songs and albums. In October, he released "You're the One," his 12th solo album. CNN WorldBeat talked with Simon about his new album. Catch the interview on Saturday.
