ABC, NBC share November sweeps victory

graphic

LOS ANGELES, California -- The battle of the networks is over. The dust has settled and it looks like ... a tie.

November sweeps, the month when TV networks battle to attract the most viewers, ended in a draw for NBC and ABC.

ABC won the highest number of total viewers for the month, but NBC attracted the most viewers in that all-important 18-49 age group.

ABC averaged 14 million viewers each night from November 2 to November 29. NBC came in second with 13.78 million. CBS trailed with 12.04 million viewers per night.

Tommy Tune leaving Las Vegas show

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Tommy Tune is ready to sing his last note. The nine-time Tony Award winner is leaving his starring role in the stage production, "EFX," after a two-year run at the MGM Grand.

Tune's last performance in the music and special-effects extravaganza will be January 13. "Tommy has been an integral part of `EFX' and we'll miss his passion for perfection and dynamic performance style," said Richard Sturm, president of MGM Mirage Entertainment and Sports.

Meanwhile, rocker Rick Springfield, 51, is nearing a deal to replace Tune, reports Variety magazine. Springfield regularly performs concerts in Las Vegas, but the "EFX" role would mark his first time starring in an ongoing production.

BLUEFIELD, West Virginia -- For all the TV fans who dreamed of being shipwrecked with Mary Ann, Ginger and the Professor, it's a dream come true. Next week, rare mementos from the popular 1960s sitcom, "Gilligan's Island," are set to go on sale.

Items up for grabs at the charity auction include Mary Ann's denim shorts, autographed photos of the cast and a script from the show. Bob Denver, aka Gilligan, who lives near Bluefield, will host the auction. Proceeds will go to the Bluefield Union Mission.

"We wanted to give something back to the community that's been so good to us," said Denver's wife, Dreama.

The nominees and winners are chosen by a Gallup Organization public-opinion poll. The awards will be presented January 7 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
