'What was she thinking'

Silk, satin, chiffon ... flannel?

(CNN) -- If you want to know where fashion is going, say fashion watchers, look at what Calista Flockhart wore to the Emmy Awards Sunday night. The star of Fox's "Ally McBeal" donned a bright-red sleeveless chiffon dress with flowing ruffles, designed by Alberto Ferretti.

Also wearing red on the red carpet were Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, who sported a classic Valentino look, and Jennifer Aniston, who chose a strapless gown from Prada. Molly Shannon, Debra Messing and Stockard Channing all chose candy-apple satin dresses.

Aniston's new hubby, Brad Pitt, had a more relaxed look (i.e., no tie). He wore a gray shirt underneath a black suit coat and a string necklace with beads. Romijn-Stamos' husband John Stamos said he wore his wedding tux, with Jerry Lewis-and-Dean Martin cuff links.

Red tones notwithstanding, there was no one color or style that dominated the event. Sela Ward, for example, accepted the Emmy for outstanding actress in a drama ("Once and Again") in a black leather-and-silk creation.

Sarah Jessica Parker, on the other hand, wore a pale-pink Oscar de la Renta couture piece that had a fitted bodice and feathery skirt. The "Sex and the City" star called it her "fantasy dress."

"She played the prima ballerina very well," trend analyst Tom Julian said.

Amy Brenneman, creator and star of "Judging Amy," chose a strapless, iridescent burgundy gown to achieve a look that was both "Cinderella and earthy."

'What was she thinking'

Geena Davis had a sheer gown by Pamela Dennis that was reminiscent of Jennifer Lopez' Versace scarf dress that created such a stir at the Grammys. She was probably trying to draw attention to her new sitcom, Julian speculated.

Lucy Liu's mint-green dress gave her some exposure, in advance of he upcoming movie "Charlie's Angels." The shiny number, also a Versace, included revealing mesh panels.

Holly Hunter, nominated for her role in "Harlan County War" as outstanding actress in a movie or miniseries, bagged the dress and arrived in sparkly blue pants and sleeveless, high-necked black top. She lost to Halle Berry ("Introducing Dorothy Dandridge"), who wore an elegant black strapless dress, made of tulle and lace.

Patricia Heaton, who took home the statuette for outstanding actress in a comedy, broke the mold, wearing a print. Her low-cut dress featured yellow stitched flowers and silver beading with black bra straps -- quite a change from the housewife-mom character she plays on "Everybody Loves Raymond."

John Stamos said he wore his wedding tux, with Jerry Lewis-and-Dean Martin cuff links

Cher, Mr. Blackwell's favorite whipping girl, wore a blond wig when presenting an award. This came as a shock to the audience and presenters, since she'd arrived earlier in her trademark raven tresses.

"What was she thinking," Julian asked, "and why was she doing that?"

Beads, feathers and other embellishments also turned up this year, Julian noted. Cynthia Nixon of "Sex and the City" held up her beaded bag from Badgely Mischka as an example. And a butterfly ring covered a quarter of Megan Mullally's hand; it caught the light as she accepted the Emmy for outstanding supporting actress for her role in "Will & Grace."

Silk, satin, chiffon ... flannel?

Jane Leeves, who plays Daphne on "Frasier," dressed for two. Six months pregnant, she turned heads wearing a deep-purple long dress held up by a single spaghetti strap that wrapped around her neck.

Randolph Duke made Leeves' gown and another one for "Sex and the City" gal Kim Cattrall. She wore a gray matte jersey long skirt with a gray beaded top with cap sleeves.

Designer Richard Tyler cloaked Heather Locklear ("Spin City") in a white dress, and Jane Kaczmarek ("Malcolm in the Middle") in an orange one.

Camryn Manheim said she kept her primping to a minimum. The star of "The Practice" arrived in a long gray flannel dress and matching wrap by Ralph Lauren.

"I like to be cutting edge," she said. "I put this on at 2:45, and I was here at 3:30 -- time management."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
