(IDG) -- Electric power systems in the United States and Canada continue to operate normally on the second day of the new year, according to the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC).

"I am pleased but not surprised that the electric systems are functioning normally," said Michehl R. Gent, president of the council, in a prepared statement. "The electric industry worked very diligently for the past two years so Y2K would be a nonevent." The industry's Y2K program has helped to reassure the public that electricity would be available to power key systems and processes in businesses and governments in North America, according to the council.
NERC is a nonprofit company formed as a result of the Northeast blackout in 1965 to promote the reliability of bulk electric systems in North America. The council is composed of 10 regional reliability councils in the United States, Canada, and the Baja California Norte region of Mexico. NERC, in Princeton, N.J., can be found at www.nerc.com/y2k.
