![]() Free software from CA and AMD manages desktops
(IDG) -- Computer Associates International yesterday unveiled a set of desktop management tools that includes monitoring software specific to processors made by Advanced Micro Devices. Called Unicenter TNG Desktop Edition, the PC software includes CA's InoculateIT antivirus tool and a software distribution agent. It can take inventory of the applications and hardware installed on a PC. It also comes with AMD's AlertIT software, which monitors AMD-based hardware for temperature, fan speed and chassis intrusion.
The Desktop Edition works in two modes - either stand-alone or in conjunction with CA's Unicenter TNG enterprise management software, says Allan Andersen, business manager of desktop and server management solutions at CA. If the Desktop Edition is running on a stand-alone PC, it protects against computer viruses, provides information to the user about the configuration of the system, and provides advice to the user when problems appear to be cropping up. If an enterprise already has the Unicenter TNG platform running on another machine in the network, the Desktop Edition has more capabilities. It can receive software updates from the platform, forward critical desktop conditions (such as an overheated processor) to the platform, and pass inventory information to the platform. Right now, CA uses the Desktop Management Interface to collect inventory information about the PC. In the future, the company plans to add support for the Common Information Model, a standard method of specifying inventory information that was developed by the Desktop Management Task Force. Andersen says that support will ship by year-end. The initial version of the Desktop Edition will ship next month, for free.
