(IDG) -- In an upbeat and playful keynote address this morning, Microsoft Chair Bill Gates officially introduced Windows 2000, which he grandly described as "the future of computing."

Gates was introduced by Patrick Stewart of Star Trek fame, who claimed to know a bit about the future himself.

Gates explained the evolution of the operating system from the days of Basic and MS DOS 1.0, to the graphical interface introduced with Windows, and the breakthrough that he says was Windows 95.

He detailed the three Windows 2000 products that officially enter the market today: Windows 2000 Professional, which is designed to replace Windows NT and 9x on business desktops; Windows 2000 Server, aimed at improving the infrastructure for file servers and e-mail servers; and Windows 2000 Advanced Server, which is designed to help companies achieve a competitive advantage through richer and faster Web sites.

Gates, Stewart, and various Microsoft employees demonstrated the benefits of Windows 2000 in four different computing environments: the Business PC, the Enterprise (which Stewart claimed to know a bit about also), the Internet, and PC Innovations.
