Review: Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike

(IDG) -- Hot on the heels of Double Impact, the premier version of the Street Fighter III series hits the Dreamcast. Is the third time a charm, or do three strikes equal an out?

Striking Impression

For those not in the loop, "Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike" is the follow up to "SFIII: 2nd Impact" and, you guessed it, the third revision of the current series. The first two were collected into one game which was released on the Dreamcast a few months ago; for the full scoop on that, check out the SFIII: Double Impact review. As with all Capcom updates, 3rd Strike packs in new characters, moves, stages and music that fighting enthusiasts can't get enough of. Graphically, the game is still a sight to behold and has the best 2D animation you'll find anywhere. The music has been cranked up a notch and features more up-tempo tunes to get you in the mood for kicking ass. Capcom has tweaked the gameplay, and character balance is better for some characters, even though some of the newer characters seem to be a bit out of place. Other new additions include a new Grading system that rates your fighting skills, a new menu interface, greater hit detection accuracy, and the ability to choose your next opponent.

Chun Li, Chun Li, Chun Li

Perhaps the best addition is the return of fan favorite Chun Li. It's funny how her mere presence in the game elevates 3rd Strike to a new level. There are 4 other new characters in the game, making for a total of 19, which will certainly keep you busy. Only the very fussy will point out that the previous two titles featured in Double Impact have slightly better colors than 3rd Strike, and there's something to be said for having all three games for your DC. All anyone really needs to know however is that 3rd Strike looks great, plays great, sounds great and is the definitive version of the SFIII series.
