ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Civil rights leader Hosea Williams died Thursday after a long illness. He was 74.

Williams was one of the leaders of the "Bloody Sunday" march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965. He was also by King's side in Memphis on April 4, 1968, when King was assassinated.

Williams died at Atlanta's Piedmont Hospital where he was being treated for an infection since October 20, hospital spokeswoman Nina Montanaro said.
