(CNN) -- Advance preparation can greatly increase the chances of surviving a deadly winter storm, according to the American Red Cross and other relief groups.
Fierce storms recently knocked out power to more than half a million homes and businesses in the south-central United States and stranded hundreds of people on icy
highways. The wintry onslaught has left at least 41 people dead, authorities say, and caused millions of dollars in property damage stemming from such problems as burst water pipes.
