| On the spot: Romano Prodi
LONDON, England (CNN) -- Romano Prodi is man facing a number of daunting challenges -- and this is your chance to question the president of the European Commission as Europe faces up to a period of dramatic change. Prodi, a former Italian Prime Minister, has now been EC president for a year -- a year which has been crucial for the development of the European Union. And as he marks his first anniversary in the job, Prodi has agreed to answer your questions about the future of the European Union.
Simply click on the box on this page to send your questions to one of the most powerful men in Europe. Prodi will answer them next week then we will publish his responses to the issues you raise. The European Union, an economic and political alliance of 15 European states, is changing faster than at any other time in its 50-year history. And as European Commission president, Prodi is overseeing a vigorous and controversial debate about enlarging the EU to include a possible 12 new member states. Some existing EU members have fears about the economic effects of admitting new members -- most from the impoverished ex-communist eastern bloc. There are also suspicions from some that union is inexorably leading to amalgamation --- a United States of Europe as some of the most suspicious call it.
Prodi is also largely responsible for ensuring that the single European currency -- introduced in January 1999 -- is a success. Denmark is voting on whether to join the euro -- and the subject is a matter of intense debate in the UK. Meanwhile, the currency's performance on the money markets has rarely been out of the headlines -- and it has not made pleasant reading for the supporters of the euro. Added to that are concerns that, with some countries already members of the euro and others remaining on the outside, a two-speed Europe is being developed. Prodi also has the task of attempting to restore faith in the institutions of the EU in the light of growing dissatisfaction with the way the commission has been run in the past. Indeed, Prodi's appointment last year came in the wake of the mass resignation of the entire commission following a report detailing allegations of cronyism and financial irregularities.
