WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Urging people to "revel in the joy of the written word," first lady Laura Bush officially opened the first National Book Festival on Saturday in front of the Library of Congress.

Librarian of Congress James Billington introduced Mrs. Bush as the inspiration for the festival and the first professional librarian ever to live in the White House.

He said the festival was sending a message to the nation that "reading is critical to our lives and to the life of our nation."

Mrs. Bush, in her remarks, thanked the 60 award-winning authors and book illustrators who participated in the events held at the library and in tents on the east lawn of the U.S. Capitol. She also welcomed 15 National Basketball Association players representing the NBA's national reading campaign, "Read to Achieve," who joined in the events.

She lingered to shake hands, sign autographs and pose for pictures with some of the visitors.

The daylong festival included readings by the famous authors, book signings, musical performances, storytelling and discussions.
