CEOs face golf challengeJuly 12, 2001 Posted: 0919 GMT LONDON (CNN) -- Business leaders from the U.S. and Europe will soon be able to compete in their own version of top golfing tournament the Ryder Cup. Former European Ryder Cup Captain Bernard Gallacher has announced the formation of the new team golf event, The Gallacher Trophy. Golf is widely regarded as the chief recreational pursuit among chief executive officers and top businessmen and women in the U.S. and Europe. Gallacher said: "The Gallacher Trophy is a corporate version of the Ryder Cup. "You have to genuinely qualify and we've got two qualifying events at world class venues, and company directors and senior corporate officers have to prove whether they have got what it takes." Top bosses are being invited to log onto the Web and register at www.gallachertrophy.com and will have to perform well enough to make the U.S. or European teams if they manage to win a prize draw on 14 August. The event is being held at Scotland's prestigious Loch Lomond Golf Club on 21 September this year. The U.S. team's non-playing captain, former Ryder Cup player and U.S. Masters champion Craig Stadler, will be at the final along with Gallacher, the non-playing captain of the European team. UNICEF, the United Nations' Children's Fund, is the official charity and the event is being sponsored by British Airways with CNN as the official media partner promoting it.
