P&G spied on UnileverAugust 30, 2001 Posted: 2324 GMT NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Consumer products giant Unilever NV said Thursday that it was in talks with rival Procter & Gamble Co. over P&G's attempts to use covert operations to gain details about its hair care products. "We can confirm that discussions are continuing with Procter & Gamble (PG: Research, Estimates) regarding their corporate intelligence operation aimed at Unilever in the United States," said Steve Milton, U.S. spokesman for Unilever.
Unilever's statement came after Fortune magazine's Web site reported that P&G hired private operatives who scoured Unilever dumpsters and posed as market analysts to glean information on its hair products. Fortune said the two companies have been negotiating a settlement since April when P&G first informed Unilever about the matter. The report said a deadline has been set for the end of business on Friday for Unilever to accept a settlement, which could reach tens of millions of dollars, or take P&G to court.
