McVeigh attorney to witness execution
(CNN) -- Timothy McVeigh attorney Robert Nigh Jr. is one of the five people the convicted Oklahoma City bomber has asked to witness his execution scheduled for May 16. McVeigh is scheduled to die May 16 for the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, that killed 168 people and injured more than 500.
He has waived his rights to appeal and the deadline for seeking clemency passed on February 19. Nigh is a strong opponent of the death penalty and has been a member of McVeigh's legal team since 1995. He said it was an honor to represent McVeigh. In a news conference after the deadline, Nigh said he was "extremely disappointed" that the convicted Oklahoma City bomber did not appeal to President George W. Bush for clemency. Nigh said McVeigh believed there was little chance clemency would be granted and felt he would not be in a better position if relief were granted. "Having nothing to look forward to but solitary confinement in a Bureau of Prisons facility does not appeal to Mr. McVeigh," Nigh said. RELATED STORIES:
