(CNN) -- Critics roasted the film, moviegoers avoided it, and it likely won't be mentioned in the same breath as "Traffic" and "Gladiator" when the Oscar nominations are announced Tuesday morning.

But weep not for "Battlefield Earth," John Travolta's stumbling foray into science fiction. The film, in which Travolta plays a 9-foot-tall bad guy with a bad case of catfish face, has emerged as the movie to beat in the annual run for the Razzies.

The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation, which annually honors the sorriest Hollywood has to offer, gave "Battlefield" eight of nine possible category nominations in the war for the worst film of 2000. Almost 94 percent of the Razzies' 503 members named "Battlefield" on their ballots -- a mandate if ever there was one.

With eight nominations, the film may surpass 1995's "Showgirls," which won seven awards, as the all-time Razzie champ.

Besides worst picture, "Battlefield" was nominated for worst actor (Travolta), worst supporting actress (Kelly Preston, Travolta's wife), worst director (Roger Christian), and worst screen couple (Travolta and "anyone sharing the screen with him").

Schwarzenegger times three

Trailing "Battlefield Earth" in nominations were "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2," Adam Sandler's "Little Nicky" and Madonna's "The Next Best Thing," all with five.

Arnold Schwarzenegger picked up three nominations by himself for worst actor, worst supporting actor, and worst couple, all for "The 6th Day," in which he played a helicopter pilot named Adam Gibson and Gibson's clone. The Razzie nominators were careful to note that the worst actor nomination was for Schwarzenegger's work as Gibson, while the worst supporting actor nomination was for his work as the clone.

Most of the Razzie nominations went to box-office failures, but two of the year's most successful films, "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and "Mission: Impossible II," each picked up two.

"Grinch" earned un-accolades for worst screenplay and worst remake or sequel; "MI2" picked up nods for worst supporting actress (Thandie Newton) and worst remake or sequel.

Finally, the Razzies just wouldn't seem right without nominations for perennial contenders Madonna and Sylvester Stallone. The chameleon-like singer for got tapped for worst actress in "The Next Best Thing," while the former Italian Stallion -- the all-time Razzie champ, with eight dis-honors -- was picked as worst actor in "Get Carter."

Before the Oscars

Madonna's "The Next Best Thing" received five nominations

The Razzies are the brainchild of John Wilson, a film industry advertising and promotion man, who started the awards in 1981 as a wake-up call to the film business.

"They are a logical counterpoint to the endless sea of self- congratulations" this time of year, Wilson told CNN.com in 1999. "We take ourselves a little less seriously than the other awards groups. We're basically here to poke fun of everyone else. It's not so much a slap in the face as a banana peel on the floor."

The Razzie trophy is a "handmade, spray-painted gold trophy with an estimated street value of $4.27," according to the Razzie Web site.

This year's winners will be announced at a press conference on Saturday, March 24, the day before the Oscars.
