Michael Okwu: Harrison tribute at Strawberry Fields

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Strawberry Fields, the section of Central Park dedicated to the memory of John Lennon, has transformed into a tribute to George Harrison, Lennon's former Beatle bandmate who died of cancer Thursday.

CNN's Michael Okwu filed this report from Strawberry Fields.

OKWU: One of the 22 songs that George Harrison wrote for the Beatles was "Here Comes the Sun," but this morning there is not much sun. There's just quite a bit of sadness, and again quite a few people who are stopping by to pay tribute to George Harrison, who was known as the quiet Beatle.

Even though he was known as the quiet one – he didn't have the pizazz of the other Beatles – he was known as a spiritual man, and the way he led his life and the songs that he wrote and his life in general has certainly resonated with the fans, many of them who call themselves "friends," who have descended on Strawberry Fields this morning.

You can see behind me what was a tribute to John Lennon is essentially made up as a shrine now to George Harrison. There are candles burning. They started burning early this morning. A peace of artwork here says "Goodbye George. May you and John be together forever."

And there are, of course, flowers that have been strewn about on the ground here. People stop by and they drop and they kneel and they pause and reflect on the life of George Harrison and about the way he affected them.

And there's another tribute here that essentially reads, "No matter where you are, your love was true."

Clearly, he was a man whose life resonated with many people here in New York. It's a somewhat sad and somber day, even though so many people knew that this day was coming.
