Emmys rescheduled for October 7

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (CNN) -- The 53rd annual Emmy Awards ceremony has been rescheduled for October 7 after being postponed because of Tuesday's deadly terror attacks.

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and CBS, which will air the show, said they spent a considerable amount of time discussing an appropriate date. It was originally scheduled for Sunday.

"We have decided it is appropriate to delay the Emmys until October 7, at which time we will present a program that is different in tone and approach," they said in a joint statement.

"Traditionally, the Emmys are a tribute to the television industry. However, on this night the industry will also join together with the nation to reaffirm the spirit of the American people."

One of this year's Emmy nominees, David Angell, who won eight Emmy Awards for writing and producing "Cheers" and "Frasier," died with his wife, Lynn, in the terror attacks on New York's World Trade Center. They were aboard American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston.

The ceremony will be held at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
