Preview: 'Unreal Tournament' for Dreamcast

Platform: Sega Dreamcast

(IDG) -- Despite the excellence of "Quake III" for the Dreamcast, a preview version of "Unreal Tournament" made it clear that the competition will be fierce and bloody. "Unreal Tournament" had most of the levels from the PC version -- for a total of more than 50 -- which is key, because "UT"'s superior levels were a big reason it battered "Quake III" on the PC. Plus, these levels appeared almost as good, with intricate detail and moody shading.

Scenery aside, the characters looked great, the action moved at light speed, and all the cool weapons remained. You'll be able to use the Dreamcast mouse and keyboard to play two-player split-screen or eight-player online games on SegaNet. The Dreamcast controller fared okay, too, but wasn't completely configurable as it was in "Quake III." Also, the mouse sensitivity wasn't adjustable and the Assault maps were missing. Still, the preview version was so strong that, even if these flaws aren't fixed, "Unreal" Tournament could very well be the best first-person shooter for the Dreamcast.
