Yahoo! wireless users get access to Google search

(IDG) -- Yahoo! Inc. Everywhere users now have access to the wireless Google Inc. search engine, according to a Tuesday announcement from Google.

The distribution agreement is the latest extension to an existing partnership between Google and Yahoo! that began in June of 2000, said Google spokesman David Krane. Yahoo! Everywhere is Yahoo!'s wireless communications initiative.

"Google's WAP (wireless application protocol) technology allows mobile-phone users to connect to the Web and browse search engines from anywhere they can use their phones," Krane said.

Google's WAP search technology automatically converts HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) Web pages into a format that can be viewed on WAP-ready phones. There are more than 2 million Web pages in Google's WAP search engine index and the Google search engine is available in 26 languages. However, the WAP service will be available only on web-enabled phones in the U.S. for now, Google said.

The addition of Google's search technology will complement the existing Yahoo! directory, a step toward developing more innovative mobile data services for consumers, Yahoo! said.
