AT&T voice over IP now in 40 countries

IDG.net

By Laura Rohde

(IDG) -- AT&T Corp. said it has expanded its voice over IP (VoIP) service to its managed data network services division in more than 40 countries.

By adding VoIP calling to its managed data network services, AT&T will offer a service that bundles transport, access and router management, the company said in a statement. VoIP allows for the combination of voice, fax and data traffic over a single integrated IP connection that is managed by AT&T, the company said.

AT&T began offering VoIP retail services for business in January, packaging it with its managed Internet service and its managed router service. The company said it is committed to rolling out more services that include VoIP.

One service AT&T can provide is to compress voice calls into prioritized IP packets and then route them over a corporate customer's virtual private network (VPN) that is hooked up to AT&T's global network, the company said.

Since its January launch of VoIP service for companies, AT&T has expanded its voice capacity from 24 channels to 48 over T1, T3, and fractional T3 MIS port speeds and has added support for router-based managed firewalls, the company said.

AT&T did not release detailed pricing but indicated that managed data network services with VoIP will be added to the existing pricing structure.
