Toshiba laptop to use low-power Intel chip
(IDG) -- Toshiba on Tuesday unveiled the Portege 3490CT, an ultraslim notebook that uses Intel's recently introduced low-power mobile Pentium III 700 MHz processor. The 3.4-pound (1.54-kilogram) notebook is only 0.8 inches (2 centimeters) thick and can provide battery life as long as 9 hours with an optional high-capacity battery, according to a company statement. Standard battery life is estimated at 2.5 hours.
The Portege 3490T is Toshiba's first to feature the low-power Pentium III, which Intel launched last month in a bid to beat upstart Transmeta and its Crusoe processor. The Intel chip operates at less than 1 volt and consumes less than half a watt of power, according to Intel. Along with the 700 MHz chip, Intel unveiled a 500 MHz Pentium III and a low-voltage version of its 500 MHz mobile Celeron. Toshiba will offer the Portege 3490T with a 20G-byte hard disk and 128M bytes of PC100 DRAM, expandable to 256M bytes. The standard notebook will feature an 11.3-inch TFT -- thin film transistor -- active-matrix display. An integrated V.90 56K-bit/sec modem is included, and the system will come with a LAN port replicator with 10/100M bit/sec Ethernet connectivity. Two Type II PC Card slots are included. An optional multimedia port replicator will provide a Toshiba SelectBay that can accommodate a Toshiba DVD-ROM drive, second hard disk, LS120 or Iomega Zip removable disk drives and expansion ports. The notebook is priced at $2,499 with Windows 2000 and $2,399 with Windows 98 and is available through distributors, resellers, and Toshiba's site. RELATED STORIES:
