Levy attorney wants congressman to meet police 'immediately'

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Rep. Gary Condit should "meet immediately" with police investigating the disappearance of Chandra Levy and answer their questions "for as long as necessary," the attorney for the former intern's parents said Friday.

Billy Martin also called on Condit to meet with "all others working on this case," including FBI agents and private investigators hired by the family, in an effort "to provide as much information as possible."

Martin issued his appeal to Condit a day after the congressman, accompanied by his attorney, met with Levy's mother, Susan.

"The congressman assured Mrs. Levy that he would cooperate fully with the D.C. police and meet again with their investigators," Martin said. "Our only objective is Chandra's safe return to her parents, and to do that we need everyone to cooperate fully and provide authorities information as quickly as possible."

Howard Kurtz: Media coverage of missing intern

Condit has not commented but issued a statement on Thursday saying he would speak again with police and that he would provide any new information he could "without hesitation."

Through aides and his attorney, Condit, D-California, has denied accusations of a romantic relationship with Levy, 24, but has acknowledged a friendship with her. The Levys hail from his congressional district.

Little was known about Thursday's meeting between Condit and Levy's mother. Sources on Condit's staff and the legal team for the Levys would say only that it happened at an undisclosed location.

Condit has been interviewed once by police, who said he has been cooperative, but they want to talk to him again. Condit has not been identified as a suspect.

Levy was last seen April 30 at a Washington gym. She had just completed an internship at the Federal Bureau of Prisons and was preparing to return to her family's home in Modesto, California, for her college graduation.

Her case has generated widespread attention, in large part because of her connection to Condit, who has blasted the news media for its treatment of the story.

"The 'tabloidization' of these terrible circumstances can only cause more pain to the Levys while at the same time doing nothing to help find Chandra," Condit said Thursday.

Attorney Martin gained prominence when he represented Marcia Lewis, Monica Lewinsky's mother, during a federal grand jury investigation into Lewinsky's relationship with President Clinton.
