Levy's former neighbors don't recall much

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A neighbor who lives three doors from the apartment Chandra Levy rented in the Dupont Circle area told CNN Thursday she thought Levy did not actually live in the building, but just maintained a residence there.

The resident, who wished to be identified only as "Karen," told CNN she shared her observation with police during the six times she was interviewed.

"She never carried laundry, or got packages, or took out any trash," said the woman. "And I live three doors down" from the unit Chandra rented.

A former intern with the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, Levy was last reported seen April 30 when she canceled her membership at a sports center near her apartment building, "The Newport."

Other residents of the building said Thursday they have grown tired of the continued media presence at the building, where Levy canceled her lease in April. Her apartment was rented to another tenant this month.

Building manager Jim Figert told CNN he believes most residents have cooperated with police, contrary to reports.

He said he believes they have fully answered questions from investigators. Police have suggested some people have failed to respond to their appeals for help.

"I doubt more than a handful, maybe four or five people, have not talked with police by now," Figert said. He said police have visited the building during hours when people are normally not home or, in recent weeks, when many are on vacation.

One resident who has not yet been interviewed said he is not surprised that he and others have not talked with authorities, since some have no knowledge of Levy during her time at the apartment building.

The resident, who identified himself only as "Carlos," denied any lack of cooperation among those who live there.

"Everyone seems to be very concerned about what happened to this woman because there could be someone else," he said. "So I think, I would think everyone would want to be cooperative."

Elsewhere Thursday, police concluded their search of the city's massive Rock Creek Park, apparently without finding any clues to shed light on Levy's whereabouts. The search of other wooded areas will continue.

The search, covering a parcel known as Hazen Park, concluded around 1 p.m. Search teams, consisting mainly of dozens of recruits from the D.C. police academy, had been scouring the woods and heavy underbrush for weeks.

The search of Rock Creek Park was considered significant because Levy had expressed interest in the area according to Web sites she visited on her computer, and the park is close to her apartment.

It is one of several parkland, picnic areas and waterside tracts authorities hoped would reveal evidence on the Levy case. Police found some animal bones, discarded sneakers and the odd bit of clothing, but none of the material suggested any link to Levy.

Searchers are scheduled Friday to comb a narrow stretch of woods and brush to the west and north of Georgetown University. Authorities have not indicated they have any specific information pointing them to any of the search locations.
