Justice launches victim assistance Web site

(CNN) -- The U.S. Justice Department has launched a Web site to help provide information about assistance and services for the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks and their families.

"This Web site is part of the Justice Department's commitment to helping the terrorism victims and their families for both the short and the long term," said U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft in a news release.

"I hope that this Web site will help give some small measure of relief by delivering crucial and timely information to those who need it most."

The Victims and Family Assistance Web site -- www.ojp.usdoj.gov/ovc/terrorismvictimassistance -- includes information about emergency assistance, legal rights and services and gives updates on the criminal justice response to the attacks. It also provides information on coping with the emotional trauma of the tragedy.

The resources available on the Web site, developed by the Justice Department's Office for Victims of Crime includes publications on terrorism, crisis response and other related topics.

It also provides contact information and links to other Web sites concerning victim benefits, compensation and other forms of assistance, such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency, state crime victim compensation boards and the National Organization for Victim Assistance.
