FAA bans flights over World Series games in Phoenix

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Federal Aviation Administration has banned flights near the ballpark where the World Series will take place Saturday night, according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

The directive, issued Friday evening, prohibits aircraft that are flying according to visual flight rules from being under 18,000 feet within 25 nautical miles of the Phoenix Vortac.

Aircraft that are flying according to instrument rated rules, as well as military, law enforcement and emergency aircraft, are not banned from the area. However, they must maintain contact with national air traffic control at all times.

The FAA directive warns that any pilot prohibited from the airspace is subject to immediate military interception and use of force if he or she strays into the banned area.

A separate FAA directive will be issued for Sunday night if the World Series continues to a seventh and final game.
