HAMBURG, Germany (CNN) -- U.S. authorities have discovered a letter written by one of the alleged September 11 hijackers, telling his girlfriend he did his duty and that "everyone will be happy," according to the German magazine Der Spiegel.

The letter was written by Ziad Samir Jarrah, whom U.S. authorities have named as one of the hijackers aboard United Flight 93, which crashed in rural Pennsylvania.

According to the magazine, the letter was postmarked Sept. 10, and authorities believe it was written just hours before the terrorist attacks were carried out.

The letter was contained in a package Jarrah mailed from the United States to his girlfriend in Germany. The magazine does not identify her nationality.

Because of a mistake in the mailing address, the packet could not be delivered and was returned to the United States, where authorities discovered it.

"I have done what I had to do," Jarrah writes in the letter. "You should be very proud, it is an honor, and you will see the result, and everyone will be happy."

Jarrah also tells his girlfriend, "Hold on to what you have until we meet each other again."
