U.S. issues travel warning for Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The State Department issued a travel warning Friday for Afghanistan, telling Americans that the war on terrorism, lawlessness and food shortages have made travel there perilous.

"Travel in all areas of Afghanistan, including the capital Kabul and all major cities, is unsafe due to military operations, banditry and the possibility of unrest given the fluid political and military situation," the department said in a statement.

Four journalists were ambushed and killed while traveling the road between Alfalfa and Kabul on November 20.

The U.S. embassy in Kabul has been closed since 1989, the warning noted.
