Leaking barrel disrupts WTC work
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Clean-up and recovery work at part of the World Trade Center site was stopped Wednesday afternoon when a 55-gallon drum was accidentally punctured, causing it to leak a fluid. A hazardous materials crew investigated the substance and found it to be an industrial cleaning solvent, said Frank McCarton of the New York City Office of Emergency Management. Work was suspended late in the afternoon until the drum could be wrapped and removed. No injuries were reported from the incident, which occurred near where Tower 2 once stood. In a separate incident that occurred about the same time, 2:30 p.m., five people sustained minor injuries when an air pressure hose ruptured at the southern border of ground zero, also near the Tower 2 site. They were taken to area hospitals where they were expected to be treated and released. |
