S Africa's World Cup bid

LONDON, England -- South Africa is hoping to host the prestigious World Cup finals in 2010.

* The South Africa Football Association has not officially launched a bid for the World Cup 2010 finals, but plans to do so at the finals in Asia in 2002.

* It failed in its World Cup, 2006, bid to Germany after losing out by one vote following the New Zealand delegate's controversial abstention.

* SAFA indicated its intention to go for 2010 after FIFA said the event would be hosted on the continent, if a suitable proposal was put forward.

* SAFA's chief executive officer, Danny Jordaan, said the Ellis Park Stadium tragedy would not affect plans to make a 2010 bid.

* He said the stampede, which killed 43 fans, was "not good for the image" but the country could learn from the accident.

* South Africa had been hopeful that its 2006 bid would be successful after it had played host to the world's best rugby teams in the World Cup, and had also been an African Champions Cup winner.

* South Africa spent $8 million on its 2006 bid, but was expected to reap £4.4 billion from the event if it had been successful as well as create 129,000 jobs and contribute an additional two percent to the Gross Domestic Product.
