Timeline to soccer stadium tragedy

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) -- The match between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs was eagerly awaited by thousands of football fans.

7 p.m. -- Some fans who arrived at the ground an hour before kick off said they were told the match was sold out but that they could enter the stadium anyway.

7.30 p.m. -- As the 8 p.m. kick off time approached, thousands more fans were arriving at Ellis Park to find the stadium already overflowing and gates closed.

Some reports say 120,000 people were admitted to a stadium built for a maximum of 60,000.

7.50 p.m -- Eye witnesses say supporters became angry and rushed a high metal gate when they were told that the stadium was full about 10 minutes before kick-off.

The gate broke in four places and collapsed, trapping several people underneath while the crowd surged in over the top.

8.20 p.m. -- Witnesses say the first body was carried away from the stands 10 minutes before the game was called off.

8.33 p.m. -- The match is abandoned with the score tied at 1-1.

The stampede killed 29 people inside the stadium, 14 outside and injured more than 100.
