Aid workers plan land delivery to Afghans

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A delegation of Uzbekistan and international aid officials will meet this weekend to begin planning overland delivery of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, the State Department said Saturday.

According to a statement, the delegation will meet Sunday morning in Termez, Uzbekistan, to finalize plans to send aid by barge and bridge to Afghanistan.

Getting aid to the country by truck, one of the goals of the U.S.-led military campaign, may now be safer than air-dropping aid because the Afghanistan-Uzbekistan border has become more secure, State Department officials said.

The delivery may be more accurate, too. Some aid packages have fallen into the hands of the Taliban instead of the Afghan refugees for which they were intended.

Military advances made by the Northern Alliance also should help "significantly increase the safe flow of humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people," the State Department said.
