Sina ranks as top China portal
BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A new survey reveals Sina.com as the top Web site in China, with Yahoo! dominating the Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan markets. International measurement firm NetValue reports that Sina is the top portal in China as of December 2000, a finding also confirmed by the latest report from Hong Kong-based Net research group Iamasia. Beijing-based Sina.com and other homegrown portals such as Netease and Sohu.com have managed to keep a strong grip on the mainland market of 20 million surfers, a market that Yahoo! is still struggling to conquer. Yahoo! ranked as the seventh most popular Web site in the NetValue survey, and sixth according to Iamasia. Since Internet polling in China began in 1997, the mainland's top Web destinations have been Netease, Sohu.com and Sina.com. NetValue's December results however mark the first time that Sina.com has placed first in China Net usage survey. Yahoo!'s recent acquisition of top Taiwan portal Kimo catapulted it to a commanding share of the Taiwan market. Industry watchers speculate that a Yahoo! acquisition may be in order to grab the mainland China audience. RELATED SITES: Welcome to www.sina.com |
