Traffic came to a standstill during rush hour as streets in the Causeway Bay area of the territory were sealed off.

Earlier a workman uncovered the unexploded World War II bomb in the densely populated district on Hong Kong Island.

Firefighters stood by as bomb disposal experts moved in to make the bomb safe.

Police gave no details on the size of the bomb.

Hong Kong was the scene of a series of ferocious battles which flared across the territory after Japanese imperial forces invaded what was then a British colony in December 1941.

During the fighting for control of the strategically important port, thousands of bombs were dropped by aircraft from both sides, many of which failed to explode on impact.

Wartime munitions are still unearthed from time to time by construction workers throughout the territory.

Reuters contributed to this report.
