Car bomb explosion in Northern Spain
MADRID, Spain - A car bomb, suspected to be the work of Basque separatist group ETA, exploded in the northern Spanish city of San Sebastian on Thursday morning. The blast caused extensive damage to buildings and cars but no-one was hurt. Police cleared the area following anonymous telephone warnings to the pro-separatist newspaper Gara and the local road safety organisation. A police spokesman told Reuters the explosion took place at around 0810 local time (0610 GMT) when a Renault Clio blew up in Portueche Street, close to a Banco Guipuzcoanco office.
This is the fifth attack since a regional election last month where the pro-ETA party Euskal Herritarrok suffered a crippling defeat. ETA has often used car bombs and shootings in its fight for independence for the Basque Country. The group has been held responsible for around 800 deaths since the late 1960s. San Sebastian is located in the Basque Country, which is a semi-autonomous region in northern Spain, home to 2.2 million people. |
