German girl's body identified

FRANKFURT, Germany -- Police confirmed on Thursday the charred body of a missing girl found in a German forest are the remains of an eight-year-old girl who had been missing for days.

A cyclist found the body in the woods near Biebertal on Wednesday and informed police, who recovered the remains and identified them using DNA tests.

The second girl to be abducted and killed in Germany this year, the child, identified only as Julia, was last seen on Friday afternoon at a playground in her home town of Biebertal, north of Frankfurt.

Police said the girl's body showed signs of blows to the head before it was burned.

A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the case, Hesse state prosecutor Reinhard Huebner said.

The first case this year in February, 12-year-old Ulrike Brandt's mutilated body was found weeks after she went missing in northeastern Germany. A man was arrested and admitted kidnapping, raping and murdering the girl.

The crime caused outrage in Germany, where such violence against children has been rare.

Police are still searching for another girl, identified as Adelina, who has been missing for a week. The 10-year-old never returned from a visit to her great-grandfather in the northern city of Bremen.
