Olympic skater's body found

MOSCOW, Russia -- An Olympic medal winning ice skater has been found dead in her Moscow apartment.

Figure skater Kira Ivanova, 38, was found by neighbours who said she had numerous knife wounds, the Russian Figure Skating Federation said.

One neighbour, quoted by The Associated Press news agency, said police believed she had been killed several days ago.

Ivanova won bronze in the 1984 Sarajevo Games to become the first woman skater from a former Soviet Union nation to win a medal in Olympics singles competition.

Her best career finish was a silver in the 1985 World Figure Skating Championships.

After leaving amateur skating, she performed professionally in an ice show, and since 1991 had been coaching children at the Dynamo stadium.

But Valentin Piseyev, from the skating federation, told AP that in recent years she had been battling alcoholism.
