Beckers settle divorce out of court
MIAMI (Reuters) -- German tennis star Boris Becker has struck an out-of-court settlement with his estranged wife, a spokeswoman for the athlete's lawyer has said.
The deal covers alimony payments and custody of their two young sons, but further details were not released in Miami, where a Florida judge had been overseeing hearings in the dispute, spokeswoman Dana Clay said for Becker attorney Don Heyden.
"It's a German contract, and it's being moved back to German courts," Clay said.
Lawyers for Barbara Becker, the athlete's wife, were not available to comment.
The German mass-circulation newspaper Bild Am Sonntag, quoting unidentified sources, said the terms included a one-time payment by Becker to Barbara Becker of $14.4 million, shared custody of their sons and either a home on Miami's Fisher Island or one in Munich, Germany.
Lawyers for the Beckers -- who were married seven years ago in Germany, where their two sons, Noah, who turned 7 last week, and Elias, 16 months, were born -- had been working on a deal for more than a week.
Becker, 33, testified earlier this month and was refused closed-door hearings by a Florida judge despite arguments the publicity swirling about the marital dispute was endangering the security of his children.
In December, Barbara Becker, 33, moved into the couple's $3 million holiday home on Miami's upmarket Fisher Island with the boys.
She filed a petition for support and custody of the children in the Miami court and claimed that Becker, a three-time Wimbledon champion, had abandoned her.
Becker then filed for divorce in Germany. He has blamed the breakdown of the marriage on the pressure of being rich and famous.
Barbara Becker, a former model and actress, is the daughter of a former U.S. Army medical corps officer.
