Iraq resumes pumping oil

CEYHAN, Turkey (CNN) -- Iraq resumed pumping crude oil through a pipeline to this Turkish port Tuesday under the U.N. oil-for-food program, the Turkish Ministry of Energy said.

Iraq had halted pumping oil on June 4 in a dispute with the United Nations over the terms for the program, but agreed to resume after a U.S.-British plan to change the sanctions regime imposed on Iraq was dropped. Iraq and the U.N. agreed Monday to extend the current program for another 150 days.

Iraq is allowed to use the revenue from the oil shipments to buy food and medicine under the program.

The oil arrives through a 616-mile pipeline from Iraq.

The ministry said oil was being pumped through the line at the rate of 5,000 cubic meters of oil an hour.
