2 Israelis, 2 Palestinians die in Gaza gunplayJERUSALEM (CNN) -- Two Israeli youths were killed and 13 other Israelis wounded, including some soldiers, as Palestinian gunmen entered the Jewish settlement of Elei Sinai in northern Gaza and opened fire Tuesday evening, the Israeli army told CNN.
Palestinian gunmen opened fire around 7:30 p.m. from a house in the settlement, the army said. Military sources said Israeli soldiers killed two Palestinian gunmen at the entrance of a house and they are searching for a third gunman. An Israeli boy and girl were killed when the Palestinian gunmen opened fire, the army said. Their ages were not immediately released. One soldier was in serious condition after being wounded in the attack, hospital officials said. Six others had less severe injuries; eight civilians had light to moderate injuries, they said. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon called a Security Cabinet meeting for 1 a.m. Wednesday. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat condemned the attack and said it is against the Mideast cease-fire agreement, his office said. "Palestinian leadership announces that it condemns the attack on the settlement of Elei Sinai in the northern Gaza Strip. This statement affirms that this attack is a breach of the cease-fire agreement," a statement from Arafat's office said. "The Palestinian Authority took and will take further measures that are required to respect and implement the cease-fire, and to stop any breach from our side. President Arafat issued strict orders to the security apparatus to identify those responsible for the attack and to take measures against them." |
