Telecom operators: BT Group
(CNN) -- BT Group, formerly known as British Telecommunications, was privatised in 1984. The London-based group is the UK's leading communications carrier -- providing local and long-distance phone services, as well as data transmission over its networks. Faced with increasing competition and a heavy debt load, BT launched a restructuring programme that included the demerger in 2001 of its mobile phone unit mm02 as a separately listed company. BT recently sold Yell, its phone directory business, and ended Concert, its joint venture with AT&T which provided global telecom services to businesses. BT is now concentrating on domestic fixed-line services, as well as providing information and communications technology services globally through BT Ignite. BT has 110,000 employees worldwide.
