(CNN) -- Ericsson, based in Stockholm, Sweden, is the world's leading manufacturer of wireless network equipment. The company sold its microelectronics operation in June 2002 to Infineon Technologies, the German semiconductor group formerly owned by Siemens. The parent company has more than 80,000 employees in 140 countries. Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, a 50-50 joint venture formed in October 2001 by Ericsson and Japan's Sony, makes mobile phones under separate and shared brand names. Sony Ericsson, which has its headquarters in London, employs 4,000 people worldwide. Its main competitors are Nokia, Siemens and Motorola.
