'CSI Miami': Spinoff a good move for Caruso
By Kendis Gibson
(CNN) -- Could "CSI: Miami" be the shot in the arm that David Caruso's acting career needs? The "NYPD Blue" alum was not really seen last on the CBS drama "Michael Hayes." Thanks to "CSI: Miami" he's getting much more viewer attention. The CBS forensics spinoff finished ninth in the ratings race last week. Its debut last month was CBS most-watched premiere. How Caruso landed a role on the show is a bit of kismet. He says he just happened to relocate to Miami to start a business. When the CBS suits were considering Miami as the next "CSI," his name came up because of his south Florida connection. While the actor doesn't feel much pressure about starring in a spinoff to a highly successful drama, he is very thoughtful about his role as a TV star. He admits he didn't handle his stardom from "NYPD Blue" well. "We were shot out of a cannon with the success of that show," says Caruso, "I never had a chance to understand what was happening and understand my job." Caruso acknowledges that his decision to leave the cop drama may have left audiences feeling betrayed.
"Your relationship with a television viewer is based on trust and you have to care for that trust," he says. "Some people don't get a chance to come back to that and re-establish that trust. I'm in the process of doing that." Caruso is getting help from good company. He is joined on "CSI: Miami" by fellow "NYPD Blue" alum Kim Delaney. Khandi Alexander, a veteran actor from "ER" and HBO's acclaimed "The Corner" miniseries, is also part of the cast. On this "CSI" the character's personal issues also take center stage along with the gore, guts and pink flamingos. The first few episodes center on Kim Delaney's character's bumpy return to the unit she used to lead, now headed by Caruso. Overall, that's more fun for the actors. "On 'CSI: Miami' you get to do everything you want to do as an actor," Caruso beams. "This is like a Stanley Kubrick movie." Rosemary Jean-Louis contributed to this story.
