Emmys stay on broadcast television
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Rejecting a reportedly more lucrative offer from Home Box Office, the board of governors for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Wednesday night approved a new eight-year, $54 million contract with the four major TV networks to air the annual prime-time Emmy Awards show, said academy spokeswoman Pam Golum.
The program that honors some of the most-watched television shows and actors will air on a rotating basis on the four major broadcast networks -- NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox. The deal averages $6.75 million a year for rights to televise the Emmys, more than doubling the $3 million the academy received under the last contract. Reports said HBO had offered the academy $10 million a year over five years to win the rights to the show and move it off of broadcast TV. HBO is owned by AOL Time Warner, the parent company of CNN.
