(CNN) -- Dozens of people have died in riots sparked by the planned staging of the Miss World contest in Nigeria. Should the Nigerian government cancel the beauty pageant? CNN's Richard Quest asked for your views. Here are some of them. Have your say by sending an e-mail to quest@cnn.com.

I do not think cancelling the Miss World beauty pageant is a good idea. The fact that the Muslims are against the idea does not mean that all Nigerians are against it too. Ifeanyi Agunnamani, Enugu, Nigeria

It is most unfair to cancel this great event. I believe these people rioting are being used by some big-wigs to tarnish the image of the present government. I am a Nigerian and I think this is one of the most beautiful things to happen to Nigeria. Irene Jones, Nigeria

We live in an era where cowards hide behind twisted teachings of religion to perpetrate evil. It's plain and simple, these people are evil. But they can't be allowed to win on any level. If you cancel the pageant because of them this time, what next? Kevin Brown, Milwaukee

The Miss World contest should be hosted in another city far from the north. For instance, Lagos, Port Harcourt or Enugu or Calabar far away from the religious zealots in the north. Sleekeejay, Abuja, Nigeria

While I do not care for beauty pageants per se, the world cannot and should not allow Muslim extremism to once again dictate how we conduct our lives. Observant Muslims have a choice. They need not attend the pageant and can turn off their televisions. Joseph Adler, Toronto

I do not like beauty pageants. That being said, I also do not think one should be cancelled in a bow to extremists. I think they should increase security and take any precautions they deem necessary, but don't cancel the show. If there is a segment of the population that does not approve, they don't have to watch it. Don't let anyone use intimidation to get their way. It sets a dangerous precedent. Dana Z, Kansas City

I don't believe the pageant should be cancelled, just postponed to a new location. I do feel it was terribly irresponsible for the organisers to choose such a controversial country in which to hold the event. It's so sad that such a large group of people feel that violence is the only way to solve their problems. Diane W, Edmonton, Canada

If we cancel the beauty pageant in Nigeria we would simply be acquiescing to the dictates of the fanatics. Nigeria is a free, democratic and secular state and it would be eternally, regardless of the wishes of hypocritical bigots. Bayo, Warsaw, Poland

I believe the organisers of the beauty pageant must make a practical decision based on the underlying motivations for having a beauty pageant at all. The controversy between the tolerant and the intolerant is a worldwide issue, not born in Nigeria nor solved there. Gerre Guerrant, Texas

I am a Muslim who does not subscribe to the cancellation of the beauty pageant. The views of the few, however loud they are, must not be used to suppress the expectations of the many. Those that are opposed to it have the option of not watching it. Abdul Karim Sesay, Lagos, Nigeria

I never liked beauty contests for women, and think they should all be cancelled. I'd rather see a beauty contest for horses or butterflies. Joanne Joyce, Perth, Australia

I believe that the Miss World pageant should be cancelled if held in Nigeria. It is a totally ironic and contradictory situation. On the one hand you are upholding and celebrating women and down the road a mother is being stoned to death, for being just that -- a mother. Celine, South Africa

By doing that, the Muslims have won. How dare they enforce their laws and beliefs on everyone else? It totally defeats the freedom of choice. Trudi Bailey, South Africa

The Miss World pageant should not be cancelled. The controversy puts a global spotlight on the atrocities of Islamic extremists. Tessa Dallas, Johannesburg, South Africa
