5.4 earthquake rattles Baja California
MEXICALI, Mexico (CNN) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 shook the border towns of Mexicali, Mexico, and Calexico, California, late Friday morning, the National Earthquake Information said. The earthquake's epicenter fell in a remote desert area of Baja California about 15 miles (24 kilometers) south-southeast of Mexicali -- or about 105 miles (170 kilometers) east-southeast of San Diego, California, according to the NEIC. The tremors were felt as far away as San Diego and Yuma, Arizona, but there were no reports of damage or injury, the NEIC said. Jessie Nunez, an office assistant at the Calexico fire department, described the earthquake as a "pretty big shake" and "rocking motion." The California Institute of Technology has reported several mild aftershocks since the first, major tremor struck at 11:32 a.m. PST (2:32 p.m. EST). |
