SEOUL, South Korea -- South Korea was on high alert Saturday as the country braces for a weekend of severe weather and flooding brought by a weakened but still powerful Typhoon Rammasun.

Although downgraded to a tropical storm, Rammasun has so far claimed two lives on the Korean peninsula with forecasters warning that more heavy rain is on the way.

In the worst hit areas along the southern and southwestern coasts large section of roads were swept away by floods of buried under landslides, the National Disaster Prevention Headquarters in Seoul said in a statement Saturday.

Authorities say the body of a young boy was found Saturday after he was carried away by floodwaters into a storm drain in southern Sanchong county.

On Friday a man was killed on the island of Jeju when he was swept out to sea by high waves.

With severe weather forecast for much of the weekend, Korean government officials and volunteers have been placed on standby to assist rescue workers.

Dozens of domestic flights linking Seoul to the south of the country have been cancelled. Ferry services in the south have also been suspended.

Chataan leaves Pacific chaos

Meanwhile a second Typhoon, Chataan, is believed by forecasters to be heading for the Philippine Sea after wreaking havoc on the Pacific island of Guam Friday.

Officials say several buildings were damaged and power lines were brought down but no lives were lost and only a few minor injuries were reported.

The entire island was without power for several hours.

Earlier, Chataan claimed some 37 lives and injured more than 100 as it tore through the Federated States of Micronesia.

On the Micronesian island of Chuuk, which bore the brunt of the typhoon at its most powerful, the local governor has declared a state of emergency.

Government officials say they expect the death toll to rise further as reports filter in from the outer islands.

As of Saturday morning local time, Chataan, packing gusts of up to 250 kph, was located above open ocean some 370 km west-northwest of Guam, heading slowly northwest.
